Staying Safe

Orchard Barns provides a safe and secure fully inclusive environment where all babies and young children are cared for by staff who see health and safety as a priority. Staff who are vetted by the Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) are fully conversant with policies and procedures that safeguard all the children in their care. The children have access to  exciting fully-enclosed outdoor play spaces, all of which are safe and secure, with staff carrying out daily risk assessments. Risk assessments within the nursery, and daily safety checks, ensure that children learn and play within safe, secure premises. Children are encouraged to be independent within the nursery and are offered the opportunities to play an active role in risk assessing their own environment. Using puppets and role play situations in conjunction with books and story sacks, the children‘s thinking is developed with regard to aspects of safety. The children also participate in regular fire drills which raise their awareness and also prevent anxiety should a full evacuation need to take place. Entry to the nursery can only be obtained through a secure front door and staff accepting entry of parents and visitors. All visitors must sign a visitor book and be accompanied by a staff member at all times. No mobile phones are allowed on the premises and visitors are asked to put them in a secure box.

Collection of children is by parents or other pre-arranged members of the family. Staff/child ratios are maintained at all times and vigorous procedures are in place to ensure that safety rules are adhered to at all times.
